I need to call an ambulance

You can call an ambulance on 112. Most military exchanges are not programmed to accept 112 for emergency connection to the civilian ambulance service.

It is important to remember that the ambulance will take you to the nearest hospital. This may not be one of our partner hospitals.

I need to go to A&E

If you go to one of our partner hospitals, you will be asked to provide some details to help the hospital record the care they provide. You should show your ID card to the hospital's admission office as proof of entitlement. Contact details for your local hospital in our partner hospital section

I've been referred by my medical centre

Your GP may refer to you A&E if they consider your condition serious. Your GP will give you a referral form, known as a HAF2. Take this with you to the hospital. Your medical centre will be able to give you directions, but you can also find addresses and contact details in our partner hospital section

I've been referred by the Telephone Assessment Service (TAS)

If you have contacted the TAS and they feel your condition to be serious, they will refer you to your local A&E department.

You will be asked to provide some personal details. You should show your ID card to the hospital's admission office as proof of your entitlement. Contact details for your local hospital in our partner hospital section

What to do if you go to a non contract hospital

On arrival you should show your ID card to the hospital's admission office as proof of entitlement. You should also call the hospital hotline on 0800 588 9936 as soon as possible to inform us. The team will:

  • - inform your unit of your admission (if military)
  • - inform your medical centre
  • - provide language support as necessary
  • - ensure that medical treatment costs will be paid for (for entitled patients)
  • - inform a patient support officer who will contact you either in person, or by telephone, by the next working day.

It is very important that you call the hospital hotline because otherwise you may find yourself liable for some or all of the costs of your care and it may prevent proper discharge planning arrangements to be put in place.

Do not sign anything in a non contract hospital unless you know what you are signing for. Be especially wary of any form that contains the word 'Wahlleistung', which means private room / treatment options. This would incur a cost that is not covered by the BFG health service. If you are in any doubt at all, call the hospital hotline.

I have a visitor staying with me and they need to go to A&E

There is a list of hospitals in the our partner hospital section. If your friend or relative isn't entitled they should take their EHIC/S1-A1 with them (previously the E111) and holiday insurance documents.

You can find more information about the EHIC card on the NHS Choices website (external link).
